Our architecture seperates the back end storage from the front end processing of all data within the system. The result is a compromise free architecture, maximising both read and write performance that allows customers to leverage the benefits of scale.

The importance of Storage Performance

Modern web services are interactive environments where users expect the ability to create as well as consume. As a result, storage systems need to be able to read and write data fast enough to keep up with the demand.

Auto Tiering: Reads

Our storage solutions allow us to provide vastly improved read speeds versus traditional hosting platforms. When data is needed by a server, our systems automatically serve the request from the fastest available tier of storage.

Storage Latency

Disk Latency Lower is better

At the first level, the SANs cache regularly needed data in their built-in dedicated RAM. Serving requests from RAM is the fastest possible way to provide data, but the costs usually prohibit using it for storage requests in any volume. However, the combined power of our SAN systems means we can provide this and over 83% of read requests are handled in this fashion.

Next, we serve from multiple layers of SSD powered arrays. Solid State Drive technology provides extremely fast transfer of data and very low access times, even for random access reads. Furthermore, we can scale these arrays as needed, depending on load, to meet demand. 7% of all read operations are served by the SSD layers, meaning more than 90% of read operations are handled by this point.

Finally, if absolutely necessary, the request goes to the spindles.

Auto Tiering: Writes

Write speeds also benefit from our performance optimised architecture which enables servers to fire off write commands & quickly move on. This helps prevent I/O write operations from blocking and delaying other processes.

Write operations are often one of the biggest loads on a storage system, mainly because they are rarely sequential. For standard hard drives, jumps between locations are costly, due to the moving parts involved. SSDs don’t suffer from this problem which helps them to outperform standard hard drives. Additionally, SSDs are able to write the data at a faster rate than hard disks.

Having a storage system that is able to write data quickly is critical to getting high overall performance. For write operations we employ a purpose built, optimised cache that will out perform even a standard SSD by a factor of 10. Write operations are sorted in the cache in order to form contiguous batches and only then written to the spindles.
